48 – The Importance of Proactiveness in Leadership– Justin Ayars
What do you do when you feel you are treated unjustly?
Do you suck it up? Do you complain? Or, do you do something to fix the problem?
I prefer the latter because proactiveness is a characteristic of strong leaders.
I have always appreciated people who take the initiative to solve problems. That is why I was delighted to have Justin Ayars as a guest on “When Leaders Talk.”
Justin is a serial entrepreneur, CEO, and founder of EqualityMD.
His company is on a mission to address discrimination in healthcare for members of the LGTBQ+ community (yes, there is discrimination. It’s absurd, right?).
Justin and I explore his perspective on leadership, and taking advantage of Justin’s experience in the startup ecosystem, we also talk about the importance of getting ready, starting with building self-awareness, to increase the chances of success.
Of course, we talk about the LGBTQ+ community and how he has struggled to keep his sexual orientation hidden in some workplaces.
Justin is a fantastic human being who takes the initiative to make the lives of many better and easier.
Listen to him because there is a lot of wisdom from which to get inspired.

39 – Are You Following a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing? – Stefano Di Lollo
Imagine a leader: charismatic, confident, seemingly brilliant. They inspire you, motivate you, and propel you forward. But beneath the surface lurks a darkness, a manipulative streak that leaves a trail of devastation in its wake.
This isn't just a scene from a thriller; it's a chilling reality that many have faced in the workplace.
This reality is the focus of the latest episode of "When Leaders Talk."
My interlocutor is Stefano Di Lollo, a seasoned leadership expert and coach with a wealth of experience navigating the intricacies of human behavior.
We delve into the complex and often hidden world of the "dark triad" - narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy - a trio of personality traits associated with manipulative and even toxic leadership styles.
We try to answer a few questions:
Does the Dark Triad have any potential benefit? Are they really the “bad guys”?
What happens to someone working in a company where this kind of leadership is ingrained in the culture?
What tools can a person use to mitigate the adverse effects of a leader with Dark Triad traits?
Can this type of leader see their impact on the people around them?
Prepare to be surprised, challenged, and inspired as we navigate the light and dark shades of leadership.
Tune in now and embark on a journey to discover how understanding and addressing the darker aspects of leadership can lead to more authentic, effective, and compassionate leadership practices.

38 – A trip into the brain of a narcissistic leader – Jennifer Fraser
Jennifer Fraser, the guest in this “When Leaders Talk” episode, is an award-winning educator and best-selling author known for her work on bullying and its impact on brain health. Her latest book, "The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health," delves into the neuroscience of bullying, focusing on how it affects the brain and ways to heal from its impact.
She is the perfect interlocutor to explore the maze of a narcissistic brain and to understand what makes us vulnerable to this kind of leader.
Through the lens of our experiences and scientific studies and tests, we analyze the critical importance of empowering leadership, contrasting it with the detrimental effects of narcissistic leadership.
One of the most revealing discoveries I have made while talking to Jennifer is about the paradox of empathy and power in leadership. Although empathy is innate, for some leaders, it is inversely proportional to their power.
The episode doesn't shy away from challenging topics like the rehabilitation of narcissistic individuals, exploring the complexities and potential strategies for effecting change.
I invite you to listen to our conversation because awareness is always the most essential tool to mitigate the adverse effects of a toxic leader on us.

37 – The recipe for success from an expert restaurateur – Dan Simons
To learn the best recipe for success, talk to someone with deep knowledge of both recipes and success!
If you are lucky, you could talk to someone like Dan Simons, founder and co-owner of the Farmers Restaurant Group.
If you have been to Washington, DC, and its surroundings, you have probably eaten in one of his seven restaurants.
His people-oriented approach led me to invite him to the podcast. For instance, I tested Dan’s knowledge of his employees: I described one of the personnel working with him, and he told me this person's name in the blink of an eye (the company is 1400 strong!)
His insights on the essence of leadership are rooted in continuous learning and the power to inspire others toward excellence.
One of the many things that captivated me was how Dan illuminated the proactive steps Founding Farmers took to foster employee well-being, starting with mental health. He emphasized that these are benefits and essential investments in their people.
We had the opportunity to explore Dan’s journey in leadership through failures, challenges, and triumphs. He speaks about the importance of self-improvement, acknowledging his struggles and the principles that guide his leadership style.
As always, there is much more, from the importance of quality in time management to the hope – that we both share -in the new generations to the significance of relationships and partnerships.
Dan is an amazing human being and an inspiring leader. If you are a seasoned or a young leader, that’s an episode not to be missed.

33 – From ashes to success: creativity, resilience, love, and leadership – Itto & Mekiya Outini
Imagine one day you become blind, homeless, and unable to read and write.
No, this is not the beginning of the plot for a new movie. This is what happened to Itto Outini when she was 17 years old.
I had the pleasure of interviewing her and her husband, Mekiya. They are the founding editors of The DateKeepers, an international media platform dedicated to promoting nuanced journalism in the digital age.
Their story is a tale of creativity, resilience, love, and leadership. A tale with little room for living in the comfort zone!
Our discussion delves into the diverse facets of leadership, influenced by their rich multicultural background and unique life experiences. Itto, a remarkable individual who has overcome significant challenges, including blindness and homelessness, shares their compelling journey and the lessons learned.
Mekiya adds an artistic layer to the conversation, beautifully describing every person as a community of selves!
We also touch upon the delicate balance of work and relationships, especially in the context of Their partnership in both business and life.
The episode is a narrative of overcoming hardships and a testament to the power of self-mastery, positivity, and the human spirit.
Itto Outini is a Fulbright Scholar, Steinbeck Fellow (2023–4), MacDowell Fellow (2024), and founder of Fulbrighters with Disabilities, a chapter of the Fulbright Association. She’s spoken for Cal Tech University, The United Nations, Verizon Wireless, The International Trade Centre, and elsewhere, and her work has appeared in The Chicago Tribune, The Fulbright Chronicle, and ABILITY Magazine. Her story has also been featured on BBC, and she holds an MA in journalism and strategic media from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville.
Mekiya Outini is also a MacDowell Fellow (2024) and holds an MFA in fiction from the University of Arkansas. 30 – Judy Robinett – “Who else do you know I should talk to?”
One of the issues I dealt with when I moved to the USA was to create a new web of connections.
I am shy (yes, I am) and I needed to learn some new skills to be good at networking. That’s how I have encountered Judy Robinett’s work, a great book called “How to Be a Power Connector.”
And that’s why I was more than happy when Judy agreed to be a guest on my podcast.
Judy is not just the author of two best-selling books. She is also a seasoned CEO known for her visionary leadership and masterful networking skills.
Right at the beginning, Judy's analogy of a shepherd safeguarding his flock sets the stage for a profound exploration into the heart of guiding, protecting, and cultivating a thriving company culture.
The dialogue ventures into the high-stakes world of CEOs, where Judy's tales of steering companies through financial squalls reveal the stark reality of leadership under pressure.
Judy's transformation from a shy individual to a networking connoisseur is nothing short of inspiring. Her conviction in the power of curiosity and generosity was very clear since the first email she wrote me.
From tales of personal failures to partnerships fraught with legal icebergs, Judy's experiences become a lighthouse for navigating the complex seas of entrepreneurship.
That’s’ her message: approach leadership with a giving hand, build trust, seize opportunities amidst chaos, and earn your place in the leadership game.
Now to you: listen to the whole episode to learn from Judy’s wisdom!
